Q&A: To perform movie music, what kind of college degree would i need, Performance major or something else?

Question by Shoebappa1: To perform movie music, what kind of college degree would i need, Performance major or something else?
I play the violin and the viola, with a major on the viola. I was wondering if anyone had experience with degrees and orchestras. Most of the music i listen to is movie music/ video game music and i would like to be a part of these orchestras. Would i pursue a BA in Performance, or possibly a music education major with a performance certificate? also, i will be getting at least a masters degree and hopefully a doctorate. thanks!

You would need a degree in performance from a good school, and then be on the A-list of players called in the city where these are recorded. These are VERY tough to crack. The same people get called over and over – it is easier that way for all parties concerned. A music ed degree will do you no good for getting playing gigs – altho it will pay the bills BETWEEN gigs, if in fact you really intend to be a good teacher. ( This pretty much what we have done in this family).

If what you are listening to is THAT level of music, you need to amp up the quality level of your auditory preparation of you intend to get into a fine music school. A local or state school is not good enough – you will need to be a grad of a TOP performance school. Good luck – this will not be easy.
